Terraforming Mars

Thanks Jim, Trish & Mel for the epic game of Terraforming Mars: Prelude & Colonies. In just the second time playing this game, I’m really liking its engine building mechanic. I had the Vitor Corporation which gave me a nice multiplier to my VP cards.  I didn’t get many resource cards for production phase at the start and didn’t fully grasp the full effect of the colonies expansion till later in the game. There were a few funny moments where plants were stolen and asteroids did some demolishing but my saving grace at game end was having lots of animals on my VP multipliers. Of course, Jim won but it’s about having fun so I still feel like a winner! Definitely keen to play it again! – Belinda

Skyrise

This game has 3D components that make you want to play and build the tallest building.  A bidding game.  Place your building next in line that is taller than the previous bidder’s building.  As the line of buildings advances across the map players try to win the round by placing the tallest building in the coloured region they are aiming for.  The winning bidder gets to leave their building on the map and claim a coloured points token.  The points for each region match the tokens gained of that colour on your player mat.  Each player also has hidden goals relating to regions, symbols on the map, building colours and more.

Amy, Lynden, Zac, and I enjoyed building a beautiful city.  Every building mini is unique.  Beyond the great looks there is rhythm to bidding effectively and skill is required to win bidding, with the correct building on the correct region.  The overall premise is quite simple but mastering it requires poise, timing and self-control.

Thanks, Lynden, for teaching us such a lovely and interesting game. – Tim
