War in the Forest
I had the chance to play Root again, this time with Josh, Maurice, Penny, and Talita. It was a fantastic match, full of strategy and intense moments. The mid-game was especially close, with several players vying for the lead. In the end, here’s how the scores stacked up:

  • Josh, playing the Eyrie Dynasties, ended with 9 points.
  • Maurice, as the Vagabond, scored 11 points.
  • Penny, as the Marquise de Cat, secured 16 points.
  • Talita, playing the Corvid Conspiracy, had an impressive 26 points.
  • And I, as the Lizard Cult, claimed victory with 38 points.

It wasn’t an easy win, though! Josh made several efforts early on to hold back my progress. However, Root is a game of patience, and the Lizard Cult’s slow early game is balanced by a rapid point-scoring ability towards the end. For those unfamiliar, Root is an asymmetrical game where each faction plays very differently, and mastering your own faction’s strategy is key to success.

We had plenty of other great games on the tables too, with everything from classic Catan to the ever-popular Terraforming Mars. As always, it was wonderful to see such a variety of games being played, with something for everyone.

Here is a report of the Terraforming Mars Campaign that started at this event provided by Jimmy…

Sat 19th Oct marked the beginning of Game 1/6 of our Terraforming Mars Campaign. The starting map was Tharsis, and the players were:

  • Mel (Yellow) – Kuiper Cooperative
  • Cliff (Green) – Mining Guild
  • Lynette (Red) – Inventrix
  • Belinda (Black) – United Nations Mars Initiative (UNMI)
  • Myself (Blue) – Teractor

Early on, some pretty intense cards flew around, like asteroids targeting players’ plants. Thankfully, I wasn’t in the crossfire much. Belinda quickly claimed the ‘Gardener’ Milestone (Min. 3 Greeneries) and almost snagged the ‘Mayor’ (Min. 3 Cities) one, but I beat her to it. Lynette claimed the last Milestone, ‘Builder’ (Min. 8 Building tags). Only 3 of the 5 Milestones can be claimed, and each is worth 5 VP to the first person who claims them.

As the game progressed, Lynette found religion and played the ‘St. Joseph of Cupertino Mission’ card and also the ‘Potatoes’ card, the latter amused us because it relates to her real-life job. Mel played the ‘Ants’ card, stealing microbes from other players—one of my favorites when I’m the one playing it! She also played ‘Symbiotic Fungus’, creating a perfect synergy feeding her Ants. Cliff, in his words, done some ‘Guerilla Warfare’ with ‘Energy Tapping’ and stole 1 Energy Production from Lynette to boost his own. Belinda’s UNMI strategy for total Mars domination was hindered by poor research options—she blamed the cards basically.

Milestones are claimed early in the game, while Awards come into play at the end. Anyone can fund them with Megacredits, but anyone can win them. The Awards this game were: Banker (Most Megacredit Production) – won by myself Scientist (Most Science tags) – won by Lynette, who went crazy with Science tags! Thermalist (Most Heat cubes) – also won by Lynette Final game scores are shown amongst the attached pictures.
