Here’s what my co-host Jim had to say about the night in Discord:

From Jim:

‘I kicked off last night with a great game of Aeons End, taught by Jared. I’ve never played this one before, but I had heard great things about it on the Board Game BBQ podcast. It’s a co-op deck builder where you and other last members of society hold off against members defending the underground city of Gravehold. We fought against some nasty looking beast called Rageborne. I fought alongside Ronen, Thomas & Jared as Rageborne unleashed his minions against us. It was a very close battle, but we won by the skin of our teeth. I still think Marvel Legendary is THE deck builder out there though.

Next, I played Ecosystem: Coral Reef with Thomas & Jared. A nice quick little card game of drafting sea animal cards and placing them in a 5×4 grid to score points by making the most of the card’s abilities. You have to balance the producing, prey & predator animals just right to score high. Managed to luckily come away with a win on that one.

Finally, after dinner I sat down to teach Terraforming Mars Big Box with Lynette, Belinda & Jen. This game is an engine building/area control game of competing against each other as CEOs of corporations to Terraform Mars. I played as the Mining Guild, Lynette as UNMI, Belinda as Tharsis Republic (one of my favs, this Corp) and Jen played as Interplanetary Cinematics. Each Corp has their own ability, but you essentially play project cards to build your engine of producing resources of MegaCredits, Steel, Titanium, Plants, Energy & Heat. You try to find synergy between cards to get the best results possible. You’re also placing Greeneries, Cities, Oceans and various unique tiles on Mars to push up the temperature, oxygen and lay all 9 oceans to trigger the end game. This particular game finished with a tiebreak for 1st between Lynette & myself. However, I won due to having more MegaCredits. Sorry Lynette! I hoped you all enjoyed my teach though, it was a great time playing with you all!’

It was a great event having Jim assisting as my co-host and then teaching Terraforming Mars. It’s a game that has been on my ‘to learn’ list for ages and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I think having the Prelude Expansion was a great inclusion for us ‘newbies’ in a teaching game.  It’s the second euro that Jim has taught me and teaching is obviously a gift. It’s a game I’d love to play again. Thanks Jim! 👍🏼
